Olympique Lyonnais have set up a UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash against Manchester United after beating FCSB 7-1 on aggregate.
After winning the first leg 3-1, Lyon were professional in going about their task in the second. OL, at home, grew the advantage over their Romanian opponents, playing attacking, proactive football from the outset. Georges Mikautadze was the standout, netting two of Lyon’s four goals on the night and assisting the other two, which were scored by Ernest Nuamah. Both of the Georgian’s goals were set up by Rayan Cherki, who now sits pretty at the top of the assists ranking in this year’s edition of the Europa League.
Their reward for progression is a tricky tie against Manchester United, who are considered one of the favourites to lift the trophy in Bilbao later this year. However, speaking last night, Moussa Niakhaté laid out OL’s intentions.
“We play football for matches like that, against United,” began the former Nottingham Forest defender, who made a big-money move to the Rhône side last summer. “They are one of the best clubs in history but we aren’t going there to take photos or visit Old Trafford, but to qualify. We have the team to cause them problems. We are here to go to the end,” he added.
