Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has heaped praise on Casemiro after his inspiring display in the club’s big win over Aston Villa on Sunday.
United strengthened their grip on third place in the Premier League with a dominant 3-1 victory over Villa at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils were eager to get back to winning ways after last week’s setback at Newcastle and they were set on their way in the 53rd minute when Casemiro headed home a stunning corner-kick delivery from Bruno Fernandes.
The goal was Casemiro’s seventh of the season for United, making this campaign the highest-scoring of his entire career. However, the advantage was wiped out shortly after when Ross Barkley levelled the clash. United, though, galvanised and responded in kind.
Fernandes provided another assist, this time for Matheus Cunha, whose excellent finish made it 2-1. Benjamin Sesko then came on from the bench and produced a brilliant pivot and smash to put the victory beyond any reasonable doubt.
Beyond his crucial goal, Casemiro contributed six defensive actions, three clearances and one interception. He also carried the ball seven times.
When he scored and at full-time, United fans were chanting “one more year, one more year” at the Brazilian. In January, announced he will leave the club at the end of the season once his contract expires.
Carrick was asked about this in his post-match press conference and offered little hope that a U-turn will be made on the decision to release Casemiro.
Speaking on MUTV after the final whistle, Wes Brown lauded Casemiro’s impact and professionalism at the club.
The former United man said [as quoted by the Metro], “Great goals and fantastic from Bruno Fernandes. The vision, the pace of the ball, it’s brilliant. First of all, obviously the corner, him and Casemiro teaming up again.”
“But the ball to Cunha, he’s just waiting. Mbeumo makes a run first, he leaves it, and then he just fades a little ball for Cunha to run onto it. Beautiful. That man Sesko got his goal. Also, I think should have done better. He had another couple of great chances to score.”
“But they stepped on the gears in the second half, they lifted it a little bit and Aston Villa simply couldn’t handle it. They were too quick and decisive for them.”
Brown added about Casemiro, “Listen, you can see where his heart is and obviously he’s a true professional.”
“You can actually say to him now, ‘You can chill a little bit, Casemiro, you’ve done everything you can in the game’, but no, he still wants to do the best he can, he wants to try and help the lads. Even if he has a bad game, he’s got the experience to not let it bother him and he can simply sort that out in the next game.”
“He’s been driving us on again this year and with Kobbie Mainoo coming back the last few months, they’ve made a great little partnership, good understanding. When you’re playing with someone like that, who has that stature on the pitch, the confidence will just ooze through you.”
United are in a solid position to secure Champions League qualification but Brown has urged the team to take it game by game and not get carried away.
“The table does look nice and I think the goal difference does make a difference this season because it’s so tight.”
“But you’ve just got to look at winning the next game and see what Manchester City do. Everything below you is blow you, we can only control our destiny. The results are what we’re looking for… I know we’ve got to play Liverpool still but there’s some games still to go for other teams.”
“Michael has got us in a good position and now it is about us trying to drive on and try to get even more points.”
United are next in action on Friday when they face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium.
