Wesley Fofana (25) was left in tears as Chelsea were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the semi-final stage at the hands of Arsenal. He has now told Téléfoot why.
The defender has struggled for fitness since joining Chelsea, and so across three and a half seasons, he has played just 60 games. Rhythm has been a problem and even when he has returned, his minutes have had to be carefully managed, particularly under Enzo Maresca last season. Speaking to Téléfoot, he has revealed the mental toll that those injuries have had on him and the “doubt” about his ability to reach his previous level.
And he was particularly emotional when Chelsea were knocked out of the Carabao Cup earlier this month. The Blues were on the search for silverware, having won the FIFA Club World Cup and the UEFA Europa Conference League last season. But once again, due to injuries, Fofana played no part in those successes.
“I was very affected. I still haven’t won a trophy with Chelsea. My teammates have won trophies, but I haven’t been present. That has affected me because I want to win a trophy this year,” Fofana told Téléfoot. The season is yet long, and the possibility of silverware at the end of it remains.
