Albion secured Championship safety with a goalless draw against Ipswich at The Hawthorns, relief clear after a recent two-point deduction.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, a sense of injustice galvanised the crowd, whose backing carried real feeling.
Morrison’s side were on top for about an hour, their grip loosened, chances went begging, but the defence ensured the point required.
There was little celebration, more acknowledgement of a superb final two months, a 10-match unbeaten run engineered by Morrison and his staff.
The former midfielder had nothing to prove when stepping up, yet this rescue act has further burnished his status as a modern-day club legend in the stadium’s 125th year. He also wants to be the next in charge.
Ipswich were the latest high flyers faced in a sequence that also included sides sitting third, fifth, sixth and seventh since he replaced Eric Ramsay. Timely wins over mid-table Preston and Watford helped, but performances against promotion chasers showed clear progress.
Left-back Callum Styles collected two player of the season awards before kick-off and suggested the squad do not want the campaign to end given current form.
It could prove the final Hawthorns outing for Daryl Dike, Josh Maja and Karlan Grant as contracts near expiry. Dike earned warm applause after a busy shift, Maja offered reminders from the bench, and Grant’s injury-hit year at least brought late minutes.
Captain Jed Wallace can hopefully feature at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday after light training last week, and Albion’s attacking unit may face sweeping change.
