West Brom have received an immediate two-point deduction for a PSR breach, cutting James Morrison’s side’s cushion to six points.

The club said in a statement that a two-day hearing concluded on 23 April found they had exceeded the Upper Loss Threshold for the three years to 30 June 2025, leading to the sanction. It added there are no written reasons yet, they dispute the findings and insist they have complied with PSR.

The exact overspend has not been disclosed beyond it being under £2million, which the club describe as the smallest PSR breach across the EFL Championship and Premier League. Albion attribute the breach to a recent change in how community development spending is treated, including facilities, staff time and resources for The Albion Foundation, and they are considering an appeal.

The verdict arrived within 24 hours of the hearing’s end. Albion are understood to be surprised by the speed and puzzled by the timing, with the charge landing at the end of March.

Morrison’s nine-match unbeaten run had lifted the Baggies eight points clear after Tuesday’s win over Watford. The deduction shrinks that to six with two games remaining, before Saturday lunchtime’s home game against Ipswich. Oxford, in the final relegation spot, could still catch them but would need two wins, two Albion defeats and a six-goal swing.
