Jimmy-Jay Morgan has been named the English Football League’s young player of the season for August after a blistering start at West Brom.
The 20-year-old forward, a £1.3million summer signing from Chelsea, collected the trophy this week. According to ExpressAndStar.com, he was recognised as the standout young player across the EFL’s three divisions.
He became the first player across the top four divisions to reach six goal involvements this season after setting up Aune Heggebo’s winner at Derby, taking him to four goals and two assists.
His August return was three goals and two assists from five league games.
Morgan says he goes into matches expecting to score or create and admits he is frustrated if he leaves without a goal. He credits team-mates for providing chances, describes himself as versatile and focuses on arriving in the box at the right moments.
He struck 14 in 36 on loan at Peterborough in League One last season and has stepped up with James Morrison’s Baggies. Morrison said the recognition was deserved, praised Morgan’s aggression without the ball against Watford, and noted he had asked for a reaction and got one. He added it is about consistent performances for the team and individually, said he thinks Morgan’s attributes suit the Championship, and highlighted his threat on goal.
