West Ham have set their sights on one of the stars of the World Cup as a possible replacement for Crysencio Summerville
West Ham face a busy pre-season both on and off the pitch ahead of their return to the Championship.
The Hammers are back in the second tier for the first time since 2012, and will be aiming to earn promotion at the first attempt.
A number of players in Nuno Espírito Santo’s side have been linked with a move away from the London Stadium following their relegation, and Mateus Fernandes was the first to officially depart in a major sale.
The midfielder made the switch to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in an £85 million move, leaving after just one season with the club.
The likes of Crysencio Summerville and Aaron Wan Bissaka have also been linked with exits from the Irons this summer.
However, Espírito Santo will also want to bolster his team before the market shuts on 1 September.

It has been reported by Spanish outlet OB that West Ham have made an enquiry regarding winger Rubén Vargas.
It’s believed that the Hammers are looking to the 27-year-old as a potential replacement for Summerville, who has interest from the likes of Liverpool.
The Spanish club are understood to be open to the forward’s sale, although his asking price is rising due to his performances for Switzerland at the World Cup.
It’s been claimed that Sevilla could be willing to accept an offer between €15 million and €20 million (£12.8 million-£17.1 million), although that could now rise as high as €25 million (£21.4 million) due to his role in helping his country reach the last 16 of the World Cup.
West Ham are also facing competition from the likes of Spurs and Aston Villa, as well as Turkish side Trabzonspor.
Vargas made the move to Sevilla in the 2025 January transfer window, and has made 35 appearances in La Liga in that time.
The Swiss international has contributed five goals and seven assists, and has a contract with the club until June 2029.
Switzerland are still competing in the World Cup, and will face Colombia on 7 July in a 9pm kick-off, UK time - Vargas has started each of the team’s games at the tournament, contributing two goals and one assist.

Summerville performed well at the World Cup, and that is likely to attract even further attention from potential suitors.
But Vargas’ impressive displays for Switzerland will be promising for West Ham, who will need attacking firepower out wide if the Dutchman is sold.
A deal for around £12 million and £17 million could be great business, particularly with Summerville being linked with a move for around the £50 million mark.
It would be a blow to lose the former Leeds United winger, but it would be a sign of strength from West Ham to bring in another World Cup star to replace him.
