Voetbal International reports that West Ham have lodged a £12.8m bid to sign Leeds forward Joel Piroe, and that negotiations are considered close. Leeds are said to be holding out for £17.1m after talks over the initial proposal.
The approach came hours after Piroe’s agent criticised Leeds for a £16m valuation. West Ham, relegated last season, are pushing to rebuild quickly.
A switch to London is likely to appeal to the striker, even with a return to the Championship. Playing for a side expected to dominate and score frequently suits his profile. The clubs were FA Cup quarter-final opponents last season.
Leeds paid an initial £10.5m for Piroe, with add-ons taking the package to £16m. Those extras are likely to have been met after more than 30 goals across his first two seasons and promotion.
After a dismal Premier League campaign, he failed to score and started only two matches. He is into the final year of his deal, with a club option for one more, and his book value is only £4m. At £12.8m the offer looks fair. Holding out risks losing West Ham’s interest. Leeds should accept.
