Leila Wandeler was beaming with pride after West Ham’s 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic, after she scored a goal of the season contender during the Women’s League Cup clash.
The 19-year-old got the travelling supporters off their seats with a stunning goal in the 65th minute.
After nutmegging her marker out by the touchline, she cut inside before hitting a stunning curling effort from outside of the box into the top corner.
Her goal put West Ham 3-1 up after goals from Ffion Morgan and Manuela Pavi. Late goals from Sarah Brasero and Shekiera Martinez wrapped up the comfortable victory.
Wandeler said that West Ham had not shown their full capacity yet ahead of the match. The victory over WSL 2 side Charlton was their best performance of the campaign to date and showed just why the Hammers signed Wandeler from Lyon.
Switzerland international Leila Wandeler said she felt ‘very, very good’ after her goal of the season contender for West Ham.
She told the club’s website: “I think it was a tough time for the team the past weeks, and we knew that we just had to work harder today so that’s what we did and I’m very proud of the team.
“I mean, of course, it was a crazy goal! I’m very happy for that. I just tried to go one versus one and I saw that my defender was getting a little bit more tired at the end, so I had more chances to face her. And then when I went past her, there were not really any players in front of me so I just thought ‘try to shoot the ball’. It was perfect then, so I’m very happy!
“The netmeg is my favourite part [of the goal]!. I’m very happy but I hope the fans won’t get disappointed after this because I don’t know how to do better!”
Her teammate Manuela Pavi scored a stunning goal of her own, with a long-range strike flying into the top corner.
Wandler in a diplomatic response to being asked which goal was better said: “I mean, it’s questionable because Paví was far from the goal, like very far and she was just like, ‘OK, I just shoot the ball’ and it was powerful, so her goal was crazy to me.”
West Ham are bottom of the Women’s Super League with no points from their opening three games.
Things don’t get much easier for them, as they host Chelsea on Saturday, who are the only team still with a 100 per cent record.
West Ham next play in the Women’s League Cup on October 8th, when they host Brighton.
