Leeds United’s FA Cup opponents and relegation rivals West Ham suffered a fresh setback when Jean-Clair Todibo pulled out of the warm-up before Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa. The result left Nuno Espirito Santo’s side 18th, four points behind 15th-placed Leeds, who drew 0-0 with Brentford on Saturday.
According to The Athletic, the defender pointed to his calf during a passing drill while speaking to medical staff, then was withdrawn from the line-up.
The £33m summer signing had been set to start in a back three with Axel Disasi and Konstantinos Mavropanos, but midfielder Freddie Potts came in and West Ham switched to a back four.
Todibo has impressed in recent weeks and, if it proves to be a calf problem, the 26-year-old could be a major doubt for the FA Cup quarter-final at the London Stadium. A back three may also be off the table, with Max Kilman an option but struggling this season and left on the bench on Sunday.
Former Leeds winger Crysencio Summerville is also sidelined with a calf issue, missing West Ham’s last two matches. He was denied a first Netherlands call-up as a result and remains a doubt to face his old club.
The loss was only West Ham’s second in seven league games and came with a poor display. Espirito Santo said it was a bad way to enter the international break, accepted they must improve and insisted his team are in the fight, adding that the fans’ disappointment hurt most. They now have a fortnight before meeting Leeds, then another week before hosting Wolves in the league.
