West Ham are just terrible at selling players, and if the latest reports on Edson Álvarez are to be believed, he’ll soon be leaving for a pittance.
Despite paying close to £35 million to Ajax only a couple of years ago, the Hammers are yet to receive a transfer offer exceeding £20m for the Mexican midfielder.
What makes this all the more baffling is Álvarez’s reputation. Back in June, he was crowned Player of the Tournament at the Gold Cup after guiding Mexico to victory – even scoring in the final. By any logic, his value should be rising, not plummeting.
Yet here we are. West Ham’s only concrete interest so far has come via a tentative enquiry from Ajax and the growing attention of José Mourinho, whose Fenerbahçe side have opened talks over a move.
But for Irons fans thinking this sale could bankroll a summer spree for Graham Potter, think again. The reality is Álvarez looks likely to leave on loan, which will do little to boost Potter’s already stretched transfer kitty.
We’re told it’s all to do with amortisation and accounting trickery, but for supporters it’s hard to see how this is a “good deal”. Once again, West Ham risk losing a valuable player for next to nothing.
