West Ham want to build something more serious for next season. Graham Potter’s team, that have just finished an inconsistent season but with moments of competitiveness, need to strengthen in key areas. With Vladimir Coufal leaving as a free agent, one of the most urgent gaps is at right-back.

Although Aaron Wan-Bissaka shone after arriving from Manchester United, his presence is not enough to cope with a long season, with European competitions and increasing physical demands. The board is aware of this and is already analysing several profiles to cover the flank. Among them, one stands out: Raoul Bellanova.

West Ham United In The Race For Raoul Bellanova

According to Corriere dello Sport, cited by Sport Witness, the Hammers have shown interest in the Italian full-back. Bellanova, 25-year-old, currently at Atalanta, is also of interest to Fulham and Aston Villa. However, the team most active in signing the Italia seem to be the Craven Cottage side.

Even so, the Hammers have not withdrawn. The price is not insignificant: the Bergamo club are asking for around €40 million. That figure could be an obstacle, but the need to find a solid replacement for Coufal keeps the option alive.

Opinion:

Spending €40 million on a full-back is a lot, especially when you already have Wan-Bissaka, who was one of the team’s best player this season. However, Bellanova offers something different. He has potential, breaks defensive line easily with passes and gets into the opposition’s box well. His profile can complement the former United player and give the team tactical alternatives.

However, with Fulham pushing hard and being more aggressive in negotiations, West Ham run the risk of losing the player if they fall asleep. They cannot repeat past mistakes where passivity in the transfer market has cost them key signings.

Should they break the bank? Not necessarily. There are cheaper full-backs in other leagues, even in Serie A. But if Potter sees him as the ideal fit for his system, and if there is real confidence that he can grow in London, then it’s time to move quickly. Bellanova is not a star yet, but he has potential.

The danger would be to miss out on him while other direct rivals strengthen their squads. If West Ham want to grow, they must be decisive, and if they believe Bellanova is the right man for the job, they must not let Fulham steal him away.
