West Ham United have given Freddie Potts permission to leave their pre-season training camp and travel to Belgium as his move to Club Brugge edges closer. According to an exclusive report from ExWHUEmployee via The West Ham Way Patreon, the academy graduate is undergoing a medical before completing a transfer worth £10.2 million (€12 million).
Earlier in the day, Potts appeared on West Ham’s official pre-season squad graphic, which made the development catch plenty by surprise. Even so, events moved quickly behind the scenes. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo reportedly accepted the sale despite holding reservations, although he wanted assurances that the squad would either keep enough midfield depth or receive reinforcements before the transfer window shuts.
That search has already begun. West Ham continue to chase Celtic midfielder Arne Engels after seeing their opening offers turned away. Fresh discussions are expected, with the club preparing another bid while Potts closes in on replacing Raphaël Onyedika at the Belgian champions.

On paper, £10.2 million looks like smart business because Potts arrived through the academy and every pound counts as profit. Football, though, rarely works that simply. West Ham head into the Championship after relegation with fewer dependable midfield options than they would like.
Mateus Fernandes has already left for Tottenham Hotspur. Tomáš Souček remains unavailable through injury. Suddenly, a player who already understands the club and the demands of English football feels much harder to replace.
Potts earned genuine opportunities during the 2025/26 Premier League season, making 22 appearances, including 12 starts, contributing one assist across 1,178 league minutes while featuring three times in the FA Cup. Those figures came in a struggling side, yet he rarely looked overawed and continued to show calm possession play under pressure.
There is another angle that deserves attention. Potts joined West Ham at six years old and climbed every level of the academy before reaching the senior squad. Players inside the youth system notice decisions like this.
Selling Potts feels short-sighted. His Championship experience with Portsmouth, combined with a solid Premier League campaign despite relegation, made him a logical player to build around instead of cashing in. Club Brugge can offer Champions League football, so the move suits the player perfectly. West Ham, meanwhile, now need to spend valuable time and money replacing someone they already had in the building.
