Johan Manzambi is making waves at the World Cup. Following his stellar performance for Switzerland, it’s none other than Thomas Müller who is now bringing the Freiburg player into the conversation at FC Bayern.
Johan Manzambi has been one of the biggest surprises of the ongoing World Cup so far. The 20-year-old attacking player from SC Freiburg came off the bench to help Switzerland secure a 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina and subsequently received high praise from Thomas Müller.
Speaking to MagentaTV after the match, the Bayern veteran expressed his admiration for the Swiss international’s qualities and even brought him up in connection with FC Bayern: “To me, he’s someone FC Bayern should take a closer look at,” Müller explained. Former BVB star Mats Hummels then added with a smile: “Or BVB.”
Manzambi had come on as a substitute in the 72nd minute with the score tied at 0–0 and changed the game almost immediately. Just two minutes after coming on, he scored the opening goal with a volley. After that, the Freiburg player was involved in nearly every dangerous offensive move, set up further attacks, and later even scored the goal that made it 3–0.
For Müller, the Swiss talent’s development comes as no surprise at all. The 35-year-old praised not only the forward’s soccer skills but, above all, his mentality and maturity.
“You can sense his flexibility, his carefree attitude. At the same time, you can already see a certain maturity in his decision-making; his work ethic is spot-on. After all, he’s part of a team in Freiburg that really works hard. I think his development is very, very good,” Müller emphasized.
Manzambi moved from the Servette Geneva youth academy to Freiburg in early 2023 and quickly established himself as a key player there. Last season, he was one of the most important players for the Europa League finalists, scoring seven goals and providing nine assists in 47 competitive matches.
The Swiss player’s strong performances have not gone unnoticed internationally either. The newspaper Blick reported as early as March that FC Bayern and Paris Saint-Germain, among others, are said to be keeping an eye on Manzambi. Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid, and Manchester United are also repeatedly mentioned as potential suitors.

For Freiburg, however, there is no pressure to act. The attacking player’s contract runs through 2030 and does not include a buyout clause. Accordingly, the Breisgau-based club can currently observe potential suitors with confidence.
With his strong performances at the World Cup, Manzambi is likely to further increase his market value. At the very latest following Thomas Müller’s public endorsement, the Swiss rising star’s name is likely to be monitored even more closely at Säbener Straße.
