Manchester City head coach Andree Jeglertz says that Alex Greenwood picking up her MBE is a “fantastic honour” for her, the club and everyone in women’s football.

Greenwood, now 32, was named in the 2026 New Year’s Honours List, and received her award at Windsor Castle earlier in the week.

And ahead of City’s trip to Aston Villa on Sunday, Jeglertz praised his club captain.

“It’s a fantastic honour for her, of course, for the club and for everybody around women’s football. I think it’s a fantastic thing, well deserved,” he said in his pre-match press conference.

“She’s a great leader, footballer, person. She means a lot to us and we’re of course very happy with her that she’s getting this award.

“So for her to be in our squad and this situation where we are at the moment of feeling the attention of the games but also having people who’ve been in this situation before is crucial.

“She’s one who’s always focusing on the next target, not thinking too much about what if. She focuses on each training session, game and that’s what we need from her at the moment.”

He also gave an update on the likely team news, hinting on Friday that Grace Clinton may miss out – which was confirmed when the squad was announced on Sunday.

“Grace Clinton has had some small issues this week which we’re assessing to see where it ends,” he said. “Otherwise everything’s been very good.”

The Women’s Super League is returning after an international break, and Jeglertz also warned that it could take a little bit of time for players to settle back into the club style of play.

“We’ve been clear of what we’ve been doing during the year, the players are familiar with our way of training and how we are playing,” he said, adding: “During the game it might take some minutes into the game before everything’s 100% perfect.”
