Sunderland’s surge has left them eyeing Europe and a sizeable end-of-season windfall. They sit 10th, with that place currently worth £29.1m in merit payments.

They beat Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur either side of the international break, climbing to within two points of the top six and six of fifth-placed Liverpool, the final Champions League berth. According to Sunderland Echo, these figures cover merit payments only from UK and international pots, excluding commercial or equal-share income.

Based on the present table, first brings Arsenal £53.1m, with Manchester City on £50.4m for second and Manchester United £47.7m for third. Brentford’s seventh stands at £37.1m, while Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 20th is £2.6m. These sums reflect the current standings.

Holding 10th would recoup Sunderland’s summer outlay on Nordi Mukiele at £12m, Robin Roefs at £11.5m and Bertrand Traore at £2.5m, with £3.1m to spare.

Six games remain, some favourable, to try to climb further. Catching Liverpool in the top five would be worth £42.4m, and even reaching seventh would push the payout beyond £35m. This weekend’s opponents Aston Villa are tracking £45.0m in fourth, while rivals Newcastle’s slide to 14th currently brings £18.6m.

Sunderland last finished in the Premier League’s top half in 2010/11 under Steve Bruce, when Asamoah Gyan, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck helped secure 10th.
