Liverpool’s stuttering title defence has reached a tipping point. After lifting the Premier League in Arne Slot’s debut campaign, expectations were sky high, yet the follow through has jarred badly. The Reds sit 4th in the table, a position that flatters given recent performances, particularly in defensive areas that have gone from controlled to chaotic.
The timing could hardly be worse. Giovanni Leoni is already ruled out for the rest of the campaign with an ACL injury from earlier in the season, which has now been followed by Conor Bradley’s serious issue sustained against Arsenal.
Liverpool had agreed a £35m deal to sign Marc Guehi in the summer, only for Crystal Palace to pull the plug at the eleventh hour. Fast forward to January, with Guehi’s contract expiring in June, supporters are urging the club to revive the move.
David Lynch, speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, shared his insight on the situation with reports suggesting that Man City have joined the race to sign Guehi.
“What I am being told is that his preference is to stay at Crystal Palace until the end of the season and then weigh up all of these options.”
That preference matters. Guehi is 25, a key figure for club and country, and in a World Cup year, security of minutes often outweighs mid season glamour moves. Lynch also expanded on the unpredictability posed by Manchester City’s financial might:
“One thing you can’t predict here is if Man City put a huge bid in to Crystal Palace and also huge money in front of the player and you can’t rule that out.”
Liverpool’s model, disciplined and data driven under Slot, rarely bends to superpower bidding wars in winter. Lynch reinforced that reality:
“I don’t think Liverpool will match the sort of money that Man City would be if they move this month.”
City and Arsenal are both active admirers and are performing better than the Reds this season.
Liverpool’s likely involvement appears weighted toward summer optionality rather than January urgency:
“I think Liverpool will be in the mix in the summer but let’s see what Man City do this month.”
