Former EFL star Adrian Clarke believes that new West Brom manager James Morrison has given the Baggies players freedom to express themselves, which was not the case under Eric Ramsay.

After sacking Ramsay, who they were warned about appointing, following a poor run of form, the Baggies put faith in Morrison to steady the ship.

Heading into Good Friday’s league fixture against Wrexham, West Brom will be on a two-game winning run, having developed breathing space between themselves and the relegation zone in the Championship.

Now Clarke, who was initially sceptical about the appointment, sees a positive trend in West Brom’s style of football, where they have thrown caution to the wind and have shown more freedom going forward.

Comparing Morrison’s time as the manager with that of Ramsay, Clarke said on What The EFL (14.20): “They were so bad under Eric Ramsey, who I think, looking back, went too cautiously and didn’t go on the front foot.

“He was more worried about stopping the opposition than going out and hurting them.

“What Morrison has done is give the players a bit of confidence to go out and do that.

“He has kept things nice and simple, positive mindset, everything has been positive. They have gone back to the basics.”

Taking West Brom’s last game against Bristol City as a point of reference, a win which triggered the sacking of Robins’ manager Gerhard Struber, Clarke insisted that the Baggies almost battered their opponents.

West Brom finished the match with better xG, more touches inside the box and more shots on goal.

“They battered Bristol City. I know it was only 1-0 but it was chance after chance after chance.

“It was so good that you had to sack Gerhard Struber.”

West Brom now have seven more games to make sure they are still a Championship club next season, but will start as the underdogs against a Wrexham side gunning for promotion.

The Baggies though won the earlier meeting between the two sides this season, at the Racecourse Ground, edging a thriller 3-2.
