Millwall midfielder Barry Bannan has been linked with a move back to Sheffield Wednesday just six months after leaving the club where he spent over a decade of his career.

Bannan needs no introduction to Wednesday fans, having firmly cemented himself as a modern-day legend at the club over the course of his decade at Hillsborough.

During his stint on the blue side of the Steel City, Bannan racked up 477 appearances across all competitions, meaning one more season would likely see him hit the magic 500 appearance mark.

Now, the Owls have been purchased by a consortium led by American businessman David Storch and have money to spend, it is no surprise that the 36-year-old has been linked with a return this summer.

But just how much would the signing of Bannan set Wednesday back? Well, Football League World decided to look at the midfielder's estimated transfer value as talk of a move back to S6.

Bannan's potential return to Sheffield Wednesday is one of the least surprising transfer rumours to emerge across the EFL, given his status at the club and rather disappointing exit back in January.

The Owls legend wanted to depart the club in the winter amid the ongoing financial struggles under former owner Dejphon Chansiri, which left the club facing a difficult battle against relegation.

Whilst Wednesday did eventually succumb to relegation after he left, the takeover by Storch has breathed new life into the Yorkshire outfit, which could see the iconic midfielder wear the blue and white stripes once more.

With Bannan under contract at Millwall for another 12 months, Wednesday would have to pay a fee to bring him back, but just how much would that be?

Transfermarkt estimates his market value at around €200,000 (£172,600), although Millwall's asking price could differ significantly.

The fee Millwall paid for Bannan in January was never disclosed, making it difficult to gauge exactly how much the Lions would demand, though they are reportedly open to sanctioning a deal.

Fortunately for Sheffield Wednesday, sealing a return to the Steel City for Bannan likely won't be a difficult task, provided they are willing to meet Millwall's asking price.

The Scot is reportedly 'very receptive' to the move, with both clubs keen to get a deal done.

Not only does Bannan add pure quality on the pitch, particularly in League One, but his return would also be a huge morale-booster for players, staff, and supporters ahead of what is already set to be an exciting campaign.

Of course, the Owls won't want to pay over the odds for someone in the twilight of his career regardless of his legendary status, but if a deal can be done at a reasonable price, then it's a no-brainer.
