Prince Abdullah has been linked with a possible return to Bramall Lane
Prince Abdullah claimed that Sheffield United will always hold a special place in his heart when he departed the club in December last year amid talk of a return to Bramall Lane.
It has been reported by The Star that the Saudi Arabian businessman has been in contact with the Yorkshire outfit about a possible role with the Championship side.
A US-based consortium, COH Sports, took control of the Blades at the end of last year, and they oversaw a third place finish in the table.
However, their appointment of Ruben Selles as manager has since backfired, with the Spaniard already dismissed after just five games into the new campaign with Chris Wilder set to return.
It remains unclear what Prince Abdullah’s possible return could involve. It’s understood that talks have been held with CEO Stephen Bettis during the recent international break.
Following the sale of his stake in Sheffield United, Prince Abdullah claimed that supporters should be proud of the club.
He believes that the Blades are special, and that his possible ownership of any other team could not compare to his time at Bramall Lane, having been with the Yorkshire outfit for more than a decade.
“You should be proud of your club, you should love and support your club,” said Prince Abdullah, via the BBC.
“It's a very special club.
“It has very special DNA.
“I wouldn't trade the ups and downs with any other club in England.
“I may one day invest in other clubs, but I will never love any other club like I loved Sheffield United.”
It has been claimed that a number of possible options are available that would open the door for Prince Abdullah’s return to Bramall Lane.
It’s understood that the businessman has refused to rule out the possibility of working with COH Sports’ Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy.
It’s possible he could invest in the consortium or the club itself to become a minority investor.
An advisory role could also be on the cards, which would not involve any investment into Sheffield United.
Meanwhile, Wilder will be in line to take charge of the team following Selles’ sacking, with the team bottom of the table on zero points from five games.
Sheffield United’s new owners ushered in a new era for the team last summer when they hired Selles despite Wilder bringing the club to the play-off final.
But just a few months later and the 57-year-old is set to return as manager and now there’s the possibility that Prince Abdullah could be following him through the door.
It’s not exactly the beacon of progress that supporters might’ve been hoping for from a new ownership, and signals a lack of ideas for what to do next.
It’s not automatically a bad idea to bring the former owner back to the club in some role given what he helped Sheffield United achieve during his time there, but it’s certainly a backwards step for COH Sports’ authority.
