Liam Delap was given the chance to lead the line yesterday when Joao Pedro pulled out injured.
The England striker toiled up top and ultimately made it 20 consecutive games without a goal. That was despite the fact that he was facing a team without its four best centre backs.
Simon Johnson in the Athletic makes the excuse for the striker that sources have told him “lack of regular starts is something Delap has found hard to adjust him.”
Sadly, that’s never going to be an excuse for a striker. You’re always going to have to come in and make the most of your opportunities. Nobody is going to play you week in, week out if you’re not scoring.
Johnson’s piece speculates that, with Emmanuel Emegha arriving in the same position this summer, Chelsea could sell the young England striker. The cheap price we bought him for should make it possible to do that without losing out on the deal.
Perhaps it would be best to just cut our losses.
Liam Rosenior is losing his own dressing room, and has lost most of his supporters too. It’s hard to see how he turns this around now.
Moises Caicedo tried to find the positives in the win – the possession and the shots from his team.
