Blackburn Rovers' game against Ipswich Town was postponed at the weekend due to a waterlogged pitch, despite the home side leading 1-0.

Blackburn Rovers were on course to claim their third win in four matches this campaign at the weekend, having been 1-0 up at home to Ipswich Town, though the match would be abandoned in the 80th minute due to a waterlogged pitch with no decision on the outcome yet to be made.

In what was another enthralling weekend in the Championship with surprising results across the board, the game taking place at Ewood Park is still yet to have a definitive outcome.

Hull City defeated newly-relegated Southampton 3-1 at home, Wrexham defeated Norwich 3-2 at Carrow Road, Sheffield Wednesday picked up their first win of the season with a 2-0 victory at Portsmouth whilst city rivals Sheffield United remain rock bottom and pointless after a 1-0 home defeat to Chartlon Athletic.

Blackburn looked set to leapfrog Ipswich in the table after the hosts led the Tractor Boys up until the 80th mintute, courtesy of a Todd Cantwell penatly just shy of the hour mark.

But as the heavens opened above the Lancashire skies, the pitch at Ewood Park could take no more, and referee Stephen Martin was forced to abandon the match with just 10 minutes remaining, leaving Blackburn frustrated and Ipswich relieved, for now.

When this match could next be played, looking at the fixtures of both clubs

As of today, no decision regarding the outcome of this fixture has been made, and no timescale has been set as to when a decision will be agreed upon.

Blackburn will no doubt favour an outcome which would see them claim all three points, as they could argue that a sufficient amount of time had been played in the match to decide an outcome.

However, Ipswich would argue that with 10 minutes to go, plus stoppage time, and being only one goal behind, the Tractor Boys could have turned the game around in that time, and ending the match prematurely would be unfair.

An outcome where the match is replayed in full, or even just the final 10 minutes with stoppage time is also possible.

Taking a look at both clubs' fixture schedule, neither will have to worry about any League Cup action, having been knocked out by Bromley in Ipswich's case, and Bradford City in Blackburn's case.

There is an international break in October between the 5th and the 17th, and then another one in November between the 9th and the 20th, so no fixture will likely commence then. After that, there is no international break until March 2026.

Ipswich travel to Oxford United on November 28th, whilst Blackburn travel to Wrexham the following day, with both not playing again until the 6th of December, a midweek fixture between then could be plausible.

Both have games on the Saturday 13th December and the Saturday 20th December, leaving a gap midweek for the fixture to be played then, if not prior.

From there, the next realistic gaps would be between the 24th January to the 31st January, from then until the 7th February, and then from there until the 14th of February.

What is almost for certain is that this fixture will not take place for at least the next couple of months, and it will almost definitely commence midweek.

Former Norwich midfielder Cantwell has not been shy in sharing his opinion on what the outcome of the match should be via social media, after it was his penalty that meant Blackburn led the match up until its abandonment.

It was Cantwelll who was brought down by Darnell Furlong in the box that meant the penalty was awarded, with the former Canary man slotting the penalty away against his ex-rivals.

The Englishman, understandably from his perspective, thinks Blackburn should be awarded the win, and has pleaded to the EFL to award the match in favour of the Lancashire side.

However, it is unlikely that Cantwell's post will do anything to sway the board's decision, and the result of this match will remain up in the air for the foreseeable.
