Darryl Flahavan is set to join Henrik Pedersen's backroom staff at Hillsborough
Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen is set to welcome another member of a new-look coaching setup at Hillsborough following Saturday's home clash with Queens Park Rangers.
The 47-year-old took over from Danny Rohl last month to oversee the Owls' current Championship campaign amid the extremely bleak backdrop of several EFL punishments and the potential for circumstances to get even worse due to the controversial ownership of Thai businessman, Dejphon Chansiri.
Pedersen has taken charge of eight matches across all competitions thus far, with Wednesday picking up a huge confidence-boosting victory - their first of the second tier campaign - away at Portsmouth last weekend, backing up a previous point on their travels at big-spending Wrexham back on August 23rd.
Due to the club being hit by transfer-related and squad restriction embargoes, the Dane has been left to work with extremely limited resources, with a handful of experienced figures complemented by several Under-21s players and the only two summer recruits in the form of Ethan Horvath and Harry Amass, who joined on loan from Cardiff City and Manchester United respectively.
Regardless of the dire off-pitch straits in S6, Pedersen has been able to add further coaching support in recent weeks, with the likes of Craig Mudd and ex-Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle coach, Pete Shuttleworth joining his backroom staff since the turn of the month.
And, following Saturday's latest round of EFL encounters, the Wednesday boss is set to poach another figure with Home Park connections.
It was first reported by the Sheffield Star last week that ex-Wednesday goalkeeping coach, Darryl Flahavan, would return to S6 having previously taken up a similar role during Garry Monk's stint in the Steel City between September 2019 and November 2020.
The 46-year-old has been a part of the coaching setup at Argyle since January 2024 following the appointment of Ian Foster, and has since worked with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Miron Muslic and current boss, Tom Cleverley, in the subsequent 20-month period.
Argyle have endured an extremely inconsistent start to the season following their relegation to League One at the end of last season, having picked up three wins and six defeats from their opening nine encounters, currently sitting in 17th following a 1-0 defeat to Peterborough United last time out.
The Green Army travel to Burton Albion on Saturday going in search of three points to help build some much-needed momentum. However, Cleverley has confirmed that this will be Flahavan's last game at the club with his move to South Yorkshire expected to be finalised in the coming days.
"Darryl's last game is Saturday. His last day at the club will be Saturday and he will join Sheffield Wednesday," the Argyle boss said.
"He has been a brilliant servant for the club. He has developed a good group of goalkeepers, and it's important that we get the right person in to take them forward again."
It has since been confirmed by the Plymouth Herald that academy goalkeeping coach, Rhys Wilmot, will be working with Conor Hazard, Luca Ashby-Hammond and Zak Baker ahead of their subsequent encounter with Wigan Athletic on October 4th, whilst Flahavan's first game after returning to Wednesday would be the away trip to Birmingham City on Tuesday - another one of his former clubs.
As previously mentioned, Pedersen has extremely limited options to work with throughout his squad in terms of depth, and this is embodied by his goalkeepers union.
Number-one Pierce Charles, who has been the subject of transfer interest, is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, which led the Owls to take immediate action and sign the aforementioned Horvath on a temporary basis to add experience in front of Logan Stretch and Killian Barrett.
The American put in a stellar performance on his debut against Leeds United in the EFL Cup second round, yet has endured an extremely mixed bag of performance levels since. However, his confidence will certainly have improved following a first shutout of the campaign at Fratton Park last time out.
