FC Barcelona are always working to improve their current squad, and that can take shape in various forms. Either through new transfers or even through player renewals, the Catalan club is focused on finding a way. Currently, however, it seems that Barcelona is primarily focused on wrapping up key renewals first and foremost.
The likes of Ronald Araujo, Pedri, and Gavi have all renewed their current contracts already. Moreover, even young defender Pau Cubarsi is set to soon put pen to paper and sign a new deal that will extend his stay at the club until 2030 as per Fabrizio Romano.
However, if there is one player whose contract renewal still remains a big mystery and cause of frustration within the club, it is Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong. With little to no updates on his contract renewal, there is a genuine cause for concern when it comes to the matter.
Recently, however, Barcelona Director Deco has been asked to speak on the matter. As highlighted by SPORT, he has already given his own opinion on the player and what he thinks of him:
“I don’t change my opinion about the players. For me, Frenkie is an outstanding footballer.”
As for the player’s frustrations about his stay at the club so far and the lack of silverware that he has won, Deco is convinced that it is a good thing that the 27-year-old midfielder thinks that way:
“He himself said that he feels frustrated for not winning as many titles at Barça as he expected when he arrived. That’s exactly what we want—he wants to keep that frustration because it means he wants to keep winning things with Barça. He’s a high-level player. Here, we want players who want to win titles, not just players who want to be at Barça.”
However, when it comes to his contract renewal, the Barcelona Director claims that it will be addressed when the time comes:
“From here, we will look for these profiles. As of today, 100% of the players we have dream of this… Frenkie’s situation will be discussed when the time comes.”
For now, the €45 million-rated midfielder continues to enjoy a great run of form. Since the beginning of the new year, he has established himself as a key player at Barcelona again and his prominence under Hansi Flick’s guidance continues to rise and improve.
