This Premier League net spend table sets out where Sunderland and their rivals finished and helps explain a surprising 2025/26 campaign.
According to Sunderland Echo, Arsenal recorded the biggest net spend at £250.1m and went on to win the title, holding off a late Manchester City push. Sunderland ranked sixth on £119.9m.
Both newly promoted sides survived. Sunderland were the highest spenders of the promoted clubs, while Leeds United posted £91.5m and also stayed up. Newcastle United endured a rough season despite a £95.6m net spend.
Liverpool were second in the net spend standings on £235m. Manchester United came in at £166.9m, Tottenham at £150.4m and Manchester City at £135.2m.
Further down, Chelsea’s figure was £10m. Several clubs posted negative net spend, notably Bournemouth on -£90.7m and Brighton on -£66.35m.
