Borussia Dortmund will be looking to build momentum on their 3-0 win against Mainz last weekend when they travel to SC Freiburg in a critical Bundesliga clash. If Dortmund have any hopes of European qualification, then this is a must-win game against a side fighting just as hard for the Top-6.
Yet Dortmund and Niko Kovač will be forced to improvise this weekend, as the team will be without some of the most important players. Nico Schlotterbeck and Yan Couto are will both be serving yellow car suspensions this weekend. Schlotterbeck has been one of Dortmund’s top players of this lackluster campaign, and even managed a pair of impressive corner kick assists against Mainz. Yan Couto has recently navigated into Niko Kovač’s good graces, so both player and manager will be disappointed.
In addition to Marcel Sabitzer’s injury, Patrick Berger reports that Serhou Guirassy has yet to train with the team this week and therefore his involvement against Freiburg is in doubt. In addition, both Niklas Süle and Emre Can have been unable to complete full training sessions, leaving their participation this weekend in jeopardy. It is also likely too early for Felix Nmecha's return, though he is expected to be fit by next weekend.
Guirassy’s potential absence will likely mean the return of Maxi Beier and Karim Adeyemi’s striking partnership, which looked very promising last weekend, Beier scoring a brace. The absence of Schlotterbeck, and potentially Emre Can and Süle too, means we might see a makeshift back-line which could include someone like Pascal Groß. Alternatively, a back three of Ryerson-Anton-Bensebaini could be worth the experiment. Only time will tell who is fit, and which tactics Kovač employs. Nothing less than a win will be satisfactory.
