Who will Cardiff City face upon their Championship return?

Cardiff City have learned that they will begin their return to the Championship against Welsh rivals Wrexham after the fixtures for the 2026/27 season were released.
Brian Barry-Murphy’s side return to the Championship after a year’s absence following a second-place finish in League One. Cardiff City will kick off their campaign at the Cardiff City Stadium on Monday, 17 August, against Wrexham, with kick-off scheduled for 8pm.
The sides last met in the fourth round of last season’s Carabao Cup at the Stoke Cae Ras, where Cardiff claimed a 2-1 victory.
Three months after facing Wrexham, the first South Wales derby will take place on November 28th with Cardiff playing away from home at the Swansea.com stadium.
Before then, they travel to Derby County on August 22nd for their first away fixture of the season, before hosting Sheffield United on August 29th. They will then face Queens Park Rangers and Portsmouth away from home at the beginning of September.
Cardiff are also away from home for their first Severnside derby on December 19th, with the home fixture against Bristol City scheduled for April 3rd.
Over the festive period, the Bluebirds will host Millwall on Boxing Day, before travelling to Birmingham City on December 29 and Southampton on New Year’s Day.
Cardiff will play their final home game of the season against West Bromwich Albion on April 24th before ending their campaign away to Preston North End on May 1st.
