Manchester City head coach Andree Jeglertz says his Manchester City side deserve to be Women’s Super League champions.
And they wrapped up the title without kicking a ball as Arsenal could only draw 1-1 with Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday night – meaning no other team can catch Manchester City at the top of the table.
Jeglertz took over the City hotseat last summer and explained to the official club website that this title is just the first step in what he hopes to achieve.
“There’s never been doubt about the talent in the group but there is something else about talking about being winners and champions,” he said.
“We started that early and we believed in that. That’s led us through this year.
“It hasn’t been easy, it’s been hard work every day but we had a strong belief that we could be sitting here in May and be champions.
“That is the first thing, and we definitely deserve it.”
And he added: “I’m coming back to the quality in the group and what the fans are giving us and what the club is giving us the possibility to do.
“We have shown we can win, but now it’s the next step. What is the next step? There are no limits for this group, we can reach more.”
Women’s director of football Therese Sjogran praised everyone’s contributions, saying: “I’m so proud of what the team has achieved this season. Every player, coach and staff member has given everything to help City return to where we belong, and they should all be proud of the role they’ve played. I’m certainly proud of them all.
“Even though last year was tough for us, we all believed we were capable of challenging for the league this season, so to achieve that goal is particularly special.
“The players who were here from last season came back this summer with a real hunger to put things right and that energy was immediately picked up by the new signings, who have made a real impact on and off the pitch.”
