Chelsea were miles clear at the top of the agent spending list in the Premier League once again this year, and Ben Jacobs tried to explain it.

Ben Jacobs was on the London is Blue podcast this week trying to explain some of the club’s recent financial announcements using his good contacts at the club. The Blues were top of the agent spending list in the Premier League this year, which Jacobs tried to rationalise:
“They have a very complex agent structure, due to the fact that they use intermediaries, they have certain favoured agents who help them broker deals, even if that agent doesn’t directly represent the client,” Jacobs said.
“If you’re using a broker, if you’re then using the actual agency that represents the player, then that’s two payments, not one.”
Sorry, so are we supposed to be comforted by the fact that Chelsea are paying two agents per deal instead of one? This is an explanation for the excessive spending, but not one that makes us feel any relief or confidence that we’re being well run.
The facts are the facts – we spent loads more money than anyone else on agents and didn’t get better players in return.
You can see Jacobs explain in the clip embedded here:
Chelsea are keen on signing a Bundesliga winger this summer, but he may consider other Premier League options preferable.
One of Chelsea’s main aims for the Man City game seems to simply beat them in one of the simplest stats of all.
