Kieffer Moore will miss Wales' World Cup play-offs after a hamstring injury with Wrexham left the striker sidelined. The setback rules him out of the semi-final and any final five days later.
According to Wales Online, he was hurt during the FA Cup defeat to Chelsea earlier this month, and scans revealed a small tendon split. Continuing would have risked a far more serious tear.
He had been operating at about 80-85% without pain, but any explosive movement risked a full rupture. When Craig Bellamy named his 26-man squad last week, Moore and captain Ben Davies were listed as unavailable to focus on rehabilitation.
The expected recovery window for this tendon issue is four to eight weeks, which removes any prospect of involvement in the March fixtures.
Before the injury, Moore was in fine form for Wrexham, scoring 13 goals since joining from Sheffield United. He also missed the previous internationals because of a minor hamstring strain.
The lay-off halts his tally at 52 caps and 15 goals for Wales, a frustrating pause in their biggest matches of the year. He will watch on as Wales face Bosnia & Herzegovina.
The target for the 33-year-old is a mid-April return to aid Wrexham's push for Premier League promotion.
