Leeds United’s equaliser at Chelsea was allowed to stand under Premier League rules despite handball claims against Jayden Bogle, as a 2-2 draw was secured after trailing 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.
Bogle won a penalty that Lukas Nmecha converted, then six minutes later his surge unsettled the box before Noah Okafor rolled into an empty net from Nmecha’s pass. After a lengthy review, the Premier League said in a statement that VAR checked and upheld referee Rob Jones’s on-field decision, finding no handball offence by Bogle in the build-up.
Chelsea argued the ball struck Bogle’s elbow as he drove into the area, with replays also suggesting a slight touch off his thigh. The laws make accidental handball an offence only when the scorer nets directly from it or immediately afterwards. As a teammate scored following another action, and with Bogle’s arm position and thigh deflection indicating no deliberate act, officials judged it accidental.
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior maintained the goal should have been disallowed for any handball in the lead-up, a view that does not fully align with the current wording.
The comeback earned Leeds a significant point in the relegation fight, keeping a six-point cushion to 18th-placed West Ham after their 1-1 draw with Manchester United, sealed by Benjamin Sesko’s 96th-minute equaliser. Leeds moved up to 15th, one point above Tottenham following a 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle. Nottingham Forest in 17th host bottom club Wolves this evening.
