Boro are only set to receive £4m this summer from Morgan Rogers’ imminent move to Chelsea.

The major talking point of the summer transfer window so far is surrounding Morgan Rogers, who is set to complete a move to Chelsea from Aston Villa.

As per a report by respected journalist David Ornstein, the Villains have accepted an offer worth £117m from the Blues for the England international, who was widely expected to move to Arsenal.

But a shock twist means Rogers is set to link up at Stamford Bridge, with the attacker undergoing a medical today and expected to put pen to paper on a six-year deal, with the option of an extra 12 months.

It now means Middlesbrough are set to receive a handsome pay packet for the 23-year-old, with media reports concluding that the Teesside outfit will get as much as £16m.

It’s an impressive amount for a Championship side to get, and all plaudits must go to the people at the top of the club who negotiated that deal, and will now be the beneficiaries of valuing his potential after his departure from the Riverside Stadium.

But the excitement may have to be cooled down slightly, with a report by the Northern Echo detailing how much money Boro will actually receive to use this summer.

With Morgan Rogers’ £117m transfer move to Chelsea in the final stages, Middlesbrough are in line to pocket £16m once it is all confirmed.

Boro signed the attacker for £1.5m from Manchester City three years ago, with Rogers playing at the Riverside Stadium for just six months, before being sold to Aston Villa in a deal worth £16.5m - generating a £15m profit.

And from Rogers’ move to Chelsea, Boro negotiating a 20% fee for any future sale meant the original figure to receive was £20.1m, but with 20% of that sum also going straight to Manchester City, it leaves Villa owing Boro £16m.

But while there was hope that money would hit the accounts in one full swing, a report by the Northern Echo has dampened the optimism of that happening.

The report has revealed that the £16m payment will be made in four instalments over the next three years, meaning Middlesbrough will only receive £4m this summer from Rogers’ sale.

Meanwhile, the Northern Echo have also confirmed that Everton will pay their £16.5m fee for Hayden Hackney in three instalments over the next two years, with an initial payment of £5.5m, which will see Middlesbrough get a combined total of £9.5m from those two players this summer.

Morgan Rogers fee development will be a blow to Middlesbrough

It will be bitterly disappointing for Middlesbrough to learn they will only get £4m to spend this summer from Morgan Rogers’ sell-on fee.

The full £16m would have been so beneficial to attack the summer transfer window with and help bolster certain departments that could really get them back in the promotion mix again.

While £4m will help boost the coffers somewhat and help them pursue other targets that weren’t previously possible from a financial perspective, there remains a battle on their hands to land some of those desired players, with the club still requiring an increase in investment despite the added bonus from Rogers’ sale.

Netting £16m would have really stood them out from the crowd to land players that could have really made a difference in their quest to get back into the Premier League, with the club now still having to be savvy about how they spend it, with £4m hardly ground-breaking in the modern market.

It will still be intriguing to see how Boro make use of the added cash, but the club will not be in a notoriously stronger position than where they have been in the past few years.
