Nottingham Forest have secured a significant boost ahead of the new season, with Morgan Gibbs-White putting pen to paper on a new long-term contract, despite a failed approach from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer.

BBC Radio Nottingham commentator Colin Fray, a long-time reporter of the club, described the decision as a major lift for the club and its supporters.

He admitted to being as surprised as anyone, having believed Gibbs-White was “probably on the way out,” but noted the emotional connection between the player and the fans, highlighted by the warm reception he received during Forest’s friendly against Monaco in Chesterfield.

Fray stressed that Gibbs-White remains a vital figure in the squad, stating that he is “a key part of what Forest do.” He acknowledged that while other players can fill in when the midfielder is absent, Forest “miss his quality and ability to make something happen” on a regular basis. While some supporters may grow frustrated when his attempts to unlock a defence don’t always come off, Fray argued that “quite often, something does happen” and that his creative instincts are an essential asset.

With Anthony Elanga already departed, there was growing anxiety among Forest fans about the possibility of losing both of the team’s primary attacking outlets. Fray remarked that the idea of such a double blow was “filling Forest fans with some dread” and added that replacing Gibbs-White would have been extremely difficult given what he brings on the pitch. Turning the situation around to keep him, he said, represents “a big, big coup.”

Fray also shed light on the factors that contributed to Gibbs-White’s decision to stay. He believes it made a difference that the club’s owner took the time to speak directly with the player, “on a one-to-one level,” to emphasise how important he is to the club’s plans. Naturally, “a big pay rise is going to help,” but the more important element may have been the sense of being “loved and wanted,” and the assurance that Forest are prepared to build the team around him.

Looking ahead, Fray noted that with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, Gibbs-White will need “a good season, to be playing and impressing on a regular basis” if he is to catch the eye of Gareth Southgate. Forest, by tying him down to a new deal, are now well-placed to provide the platform for him to do exactly that.
