Newcastle United are among the clubs interested in Sporting CP striker Luis Suarez, with the Magpies looking to add more firepower to their frontline.
According to CM Journal, Newcastle are ready to battle it out for the 28-year-old, who has bagged 33 goals and seven assists in 42 appearances this term.
The Newcastle target has fired his team to second place in the Primeira Liga standings following the departure of Viktor Gyokeres over the summer.
He joined Sporting CP from Almeria to replace the Swedish striker and has been a revelation. His performances in Portugal have attracted the interest of the Magpies.
Newcastle will be wary of his €80 million release clause and the interest from Premier League rivals Liverpool.
However, Newcastle must resist the temptation to dive headfirst into another marquee attacking signing without proper scrutiny.
Suarez will be 29 by December, and committing €80 million to a player just entering his peak years is far from a calculated investment. It is a gamble.
The Magpies have already shown a willingness to spend big, splashing €80 million on Nick Woltemade and £55 million on Yoane Wissa last summer.
Replacing one high-cost forward with another of a similar risk profile is poor squad planning rather than progression.
There is no doubt that Suarez’s movement inside the box is sharp and instinctive, a trait that has powered his impressive goal return in Portugal.
But the Premier League is a different beast entirely. The physicality, tempo, and tactical demands raise serious questions about whether his link-up play can translate effectively.
Newcastle missed the window to take a calculated punt on the striker when his value was lower.
Now, at this price point, the margin for error is too thin. They will be far wiser to channel those resources into more rounded, Premier League-proven profiles.
