Liverpool are set to face Tottenham on Sunday in a clash that will have huge repercussions for both sides.

The Reds find themselves in a battle to finish in the Premier League top four in order to secure Champions League qualification, and Spurs are struggling to fight off relegation.

Three points would be massive for either side, but the result could have some long-lasting effects for both.

Much has been made of what will happen to Spurs’ squad if they are relegated from the Premier League, and there is one player in particular that Arne Slot’s side should be keeping a close eye on.

Liverpool can move a step closer to ideal defender by beating Spurs

Micky van de Ven is the Spurs defender that has been most linked with a switch to Anfield, but it isn’t the Dutchman that Liverpool should be focussing on.

Luka Vuskovic, who is on loan with Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga, fits the Reds’ current recruitment strategy perfectly and should be the priority player Liverpool target if Tottenham do suffer relegation.

The 19-year-old has excelled in Germany this season, playing almost every minute for Hamburger and even finding the back of the net five times from the defence.

Known for his aerial ability and defensive prowess, Vuskovic has established himself as one of the best young players in his position this season, something Liverpool’s recruitment team will be well aware of.

Valued at around €30 million (~£26m) by FootballTransfers, the Croatian teenager would represent excellent value for money and could be available if Spurs do fall into the Championship.

A deal for Vuskovic won’t be simple however, as Barcelona are also monitoring the situation, Hamburger are pushing for a second loan and Tottenham want the teenager to stay in North London.

Having already agreed a deal for Jeremy Jacquet, Vuskovic could be the cherry on the cake for Liverpool’s defensive rebuild – especially if Ibrahima Konate leaves on a fee when his contract expires in June.

The Reds’ chances of securing a deal for the Croatian star will increase greatly if Spurs are relegated, so securing a victory at Anfield on Sunday will not only be a bonus in the push for a top four finish but could also help seal Vuskovic’s departure from Tottenham.
