Why Roma are considering Artem Dovbyk’s January sale

Artem Dovbyk’s future at Roma is shrouded in uncertainty as the Ukrainian striker continues to struggle in the Italian capital. Despite arriving in 2024 with the weight of high expectations and a significant price tag, the former Girona forward has found life difficult under Gian Piero Gasperini.

According to TMW, Dovbyk has “failed the Gasperini test,” struggling to adapt to the tactical rigors and physical demands imposed by the coach. His inability to integrate into the Giallorossi’s system has mirrored the difficult first season experienced by Edin Džeko, though there is far less certainty that Dovbyk will be afforded the time to turn things around as the Bosnian eventually did.

The report indicates that Dovbyk is now effectively on the market, potentially serving as a “bargaining chip” for Roma to secure other targets. The club is reportedly open to an exchange—with Everton’s Beto mentioned as a theoretical possibility—to avoid a capital loss on their original €35 million investment. However, a traditional loan move remains difficult because Roma requires immediate liquidity to fund their own incoming transfer goals.

With his value at risk of plummeting if his struggles continue, the next few weeks will be decisive. Roma faces a dilemma: hold out for a permanent suitor willing to pay around €25-28 million or find a creative swap deal to solve their offensive woes before the January window closes.
