Sheffield United must beat Birmingham City for Liverpool starlet's signature
Sheffield United must beat Birmingham City in a transfer deal for Liverpool youngster Lewis Koumas.
Liverpool starlet Koumas has been a name on the radar of many Championship clubs this summer after seeking to impress last season whilst out on loan with Stoke City.
The 19-year-old made 43 league appearances for the Potters last season where he clocked up three goals and two assists. As well as being renowned for his tricky attributes in his favoured left-wing position, Koumas also featured through the middle for Stoke and the Liverpool youth teams, making him a versatile asset to any club.
With the race for his signature bringing about a lot of speculation, Sheffield United would benefit from Koumas' youthful talents, which could rival those of new signing Louie Barry, and the experienced Callum O'Hare.
Since Koumas' loan with Stoke City, the Liverpool starlet has attracted the interest of four Championship clubs, with it being reported via the Yorkshire Post that Sheffield United and Hull City were first interested in the race for the 19-year-old.
However, the Liverpool Echo stated that Birmingham City and Wrexham joined the party, looking to land the signing of Koumas on a permanent deal.
Despite Koumas's name being closely monitored in this window, he has not necessarily been at the top of the list for any of the four clubs, with all four respectively making movement in forward areas already this window.
Birmingham have had plenty of players coming in and out of the door at St. Andrew's this summer, with their forward line seeing a lot of improvement. With the likes of Jay Stansfield now accompanied by Demarai Gray, Kyogo Furuhashi, and Marvin Ducksch just to name a few, there may be question marks over Koumas' game time if he was to make the move to the West Midlands.
Instead, Sheffield United, under the new management of Ruben Selles, could prove to be a perfect fit for the Welsh International to develop with only one year of EFL experience under his belt.
The summer signings of the well-regarded Louie Barry and Nigerian right-winger Ehije Ukaki are two players to excite the Blades fans this season, but with little transfer activity outside of the two wide men, Koumas could bring Bramall Lane to life with his raw attacking nature and proven ability to beat a man and provide dangerous crosses into the box.
As well as his desire to get forward, Koumas can reinforce Selles' much-needed options in the final third, create competition for places, and allow Selles to rotate his attackers.
Selles made it clear via the Yorkshire Post that Sheffield United's transfer window has been nowhere near good enough.
He said: "I think our process has not been good enough. I think that is obvious. At the beginning of the market, we talked about reinforcement with three players. Now with Anel Ahmedhodzic and Kieffer Moore gone, it’s five players.
"We have not been able to bring anybody else for (because of) different circumstances and on that, everyone has a part of it and I will accept my part of it."
The signing of Koumas could soften the blow for many Blades fans this summer transfer window. With merely 10 days left for Sheffield United to do business, the 19-year-old Liverpool star must be a priority with competition from Championship rivals, Birmingham, proving to be fierce.
