Why the Los Angeles Galaxy are without a win but have two losses this year

As we know, a season ago, the Los Angeles Galaxy won their sixth MLS Cup. A great start to the 2024 regular season certainly helped matters. The team went unbeaten in their first six games.
The LA Galaxy did not lose their second game of the season until Match #10 when they faced FC Austin. It wasn't until June 1st when the Galaxy lost their third game of the season.
In as many games, the six-time champions now have two losses. If the Los Angeles Galaxy don't figure it out quick, they could have their third loss this Sunday before the months of April or May even hit.
For a team that scored almost 70 regular season goals last year, this version of the LA Galaxy looks anemic at best on offense. Gabriel Pec's first goal of the 2025 season came late in the first half.
A week ago, the Galaxy struggled to get many shots off against newcomers San Diego FC. The defending champions had seven attempts with just three on target. Against the Vancouver Whitecaps, the Galaxy had 15 total shot attempts and only four were on target.
"We need to do a little better job of just making game management decisions, shifting the field so that we are playing in their half of the field. We need to be more mindful when we do build the attacks and get to the other half of the field. I felt like we turned over the ball too easily when we did get to their half of the field, and then it just kept the momentum built in us."Greg Vanney, Head Coach of the LA Galaxy
The lack of efficiency on offense is hurting the Los Angeles Galaxy early on. Of the Galaxy's top four scorers from last season, only Pec has taken the field. Dejan Joveljic has been traded, and Riqui Puig is still recovering from ACL surgery.
Joseph Paintsil should be back before the end of next month. However, his presence is greatly missed. The addition of Christian Ramirez has not panned out, yet.
Ramirez isn't the only new addition to the Los Angeles Galaxy. The current roster also welcomed Mathias Jorgensen, Axel Essengue, Lucas Sanabria, Elijah Wynder and goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski.
Novak Micovic has started in place of John McCarthy. The 2022 MLS Cup Finals MVP was added fourteen months ago. Head coach Greg Vanney would be more than justified in pulling Micovic from the Starting XI in favor of McCarthy.
"It's tough right now. I don't even have words to describe what we're feeling right now. There's a lot we can say, but there's a lot we can't at the same time, because we [could] get in trouble. But as a team we need to be better. "Diego Fagundez, LA Galaxy midfielder
Three keys for the LA Galaxy are to control the action. In both games thus far, Vanney's squad has given up the slight edge in terms of possession time and percentage.
Furthermore, the 4-3-3 lineup worked wonderfully for the LA Galaxy last season, epescially in the playoffs. Vanney chose a 4-2-3-1 formation in the season opener and then switched to a rare 4-4-2 formation on Sunday.
Consistency is key. Which may also be why McCarthy should start and Micovic should sit. The Los Angeles Galaxy lost just eight games last year. They are already a fourth of the way there now. Yikes!
