Promising young defender Tyler Fredricson appears to have played his final game for Manchester United.

When United announced their 25-man squad for the trip to Helsinki to face Wrexham on Saturday, many quickly noticed Fredricson’s omission.

Pre‑season should have been Tyler Fredricson’s chance to win over Carrick

With most senior players still away after the World Cup, pre‑season offered younger talents the perfect stage to impress and push themselves into Carrick’s plans. Fredricson was among those tipped to finally reshape his Old Trafford fortunes.

During the 2024/25 campaign, as The Red Devils battled injuries, the 21‑year‑old stepped up and became a dependable option for Ruben Amorim.

The ball‑playing centre‑back, as Amorim described him, made four league appearances and showed glimpses of real quality.

Last season, however, opportunities were scarce. Despite training regularly with the senior squad, he managed just one first-team appearance.

In January, a loan move to Celtic was lined up, but a calf injury scuppered the deal and he remained at M16.

Permanent exit on the cards

Now, a permanent departure looks inevitable. Simon Stone, writing in his BBC column, reports:

“Defender Tyler Fredricson is not involved either before what is expected to be a permanent summer move away from Old Trafford. Europe is seen as a likely destination for the 21‑year‑old, whose proposed switch to Celtic in January fell through after he was injured before it could be completed.”

It will be intriguing to see where Fredricson ends up, though it is unfortunate that his Manchester United career never truly took off.

Even so, with Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven emerging, United’s defence appears well‑stocked. If the pair fulfil their potential, the backline should be secure for years to come.

Fredricson is not the only defender linked with an exit. Noussair Mazraoui is wanted at AC Milan, while Harry Amass is also tipped to leave, though it will likely be on a loan deal.
