England Women’s boss Sarina Wiegman thinks her side are in a “good place” to retain their Euros crown after thrashing Wales.
The Lionesses beat Wales 6-1 to book their place in the quarter-finals. After the match Wiegman said: “Really good. Six goals. What we wanted to do is dictate the game and that’s what we did.
“That’s really good to see and the most important thing is that we’re through and we’re out of this very hard group.
“I think we’re in a good place. As far as I know, everyone came out fit so that’s very important too and good.”
England’s tournament got off to a tricky start, as they suffered defeat to France in their opening game.
Wiegman admitted: “Of course we didn’t have a good start against France. With that loss the urgency came and the team really responded well to that. Now hopefully we can show that again against Sweden.”
The Lionesses have bounced back since their disappointing opener. They have started to find form, recording a 4-0 victory over the Netherlands before the win over Wales.
The England boss said: “I think we built momentum also from the France game.
“It really brought us together, everyone really wanted to perform and really wants to be successful. And then this urgency comes.
“In the Netherlands game we created urgency or momentum by playing really well, playing to our strengths.
“You could see the togetherness of the team.”
After finishing second in Group D, the Lionesses will now face a strong Swedish side in the quarter-finals. Wiegman said: “We’re in a good place and we’re really happy.
“That helps going into Sweden, but at the same time we know Sweden will be a totally different game than tonight.
“If you want to be successful in the tournament, you should be able to win every single game. So that’s how we approach it.
“You’re now in the knockout stage and that’s exciting. You just know you have to win the game.
“Let’s see what happens but since the France game there was urgency for us anyway.”
Lauren James has been one of England’s star players despite coming into the tournament off the back of an injury, but has been able to start every game so far. Her manager said: “Of course I’m happy. It looks like she’s really enjoying herself and she’s working hard.
“She looks very relaxed and that relaxation makes her very fluid. The team tries to put her in positions where she can make a difference and at the same time, when necessary, she really works hard.”
