Smoke from Canadian wildfires forced the postponement of Chicago Fire’s MLS match against Vancouver Whitecaps on Thursday, delaying Robert Lewandowski’s first appearance for the Illinois club.

The fixture, scheduled for Thursday evening after a two-month league pause for the 2026 World Cup, has been rearranged for six October. The club said in a statement that poor air quality in the Chicago area, caused by wildfire smoke, prompted the decision.

The 37-year-old Poland striker signed a two-season deal in late June and this game was set to be his first outing for Chicago.

He could make his bow next week away to Inter Miami.

Wildfires in Canada have burned for several days, with smoke on Thursday drifting into the north-east United States and New York, leaving millions facing severely degraded air quality. The country is dealing with more than 830 active fires, and at least 50,000 hectares have burned in recent days.
