Cristiano Ronaldo is aiming to become the first player to reach 1,000 professional goals, yet Portugal coach Roberto Martinez says the figure is not a target in itself. For him, any landmark would be a consequence of the forward’s daily standards, not an obsession.
"He's at a very good point in his career... His secret is being the best he can be today... I don't think it's a goal," he told Marca.
Ronaldo, 39, has extended his Al-Nassr contract to 2027. He has 955 career goals, leaving him 45 short, and some even suggest he could one day share a pitch with his eldest son, Cristiano Jr.
On the pitch he scored five in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, but debate over his role resurfaced after a defeat to the Republic of Ireland in which he was sent off for elbowing Dara O’Shea. Portugal then thrashed Armenia 9-1 without him as he served a suspension.
"Attitude. There are three pillars that we constantly analyze: talent, experience, and the attitude he can bring to the Selecao... 25 goals in 30 games playing as a striker shows that what he does on the field contributes a lot." He also said: "We're talking about a player who started out as a very skillful winger and is now more of a target man inside the box."
Ronaldo has indicated the 2026 World Cup will be his last. He received a three-match ban for the Ireland red card, with FIFA deferring two under a one-year probation, so he is eligible for the group phase if selected. Portugal will face Uzbekistan, Colombia and the inter-confederation play-off winner from New Caledonia, Jamaica or DR Congo.
