Southampton's controversial end to last season has left them at risk of losing key assets, such as Leo Scienza.

The Saints qualified for the Championship play-offs last term, but were kicked out of the competition after being found guilty of spying on a Middlesbrough training session by the Disciplinary Commission.

Tonda Eckert's men have also been deducted four points ahead of next season, having also spied on both Oxford United and Ipswich Town during the regular campaign.

Southampton boss Eckert could also be banned for his involvement in the 'Spygate' scandal, only adding to the uncertainty at St Mary's Stadium amid the summer transfer window.

Leo Scienza established himself as one of the best wingers in the Championship last season, scoring seven goals and registering 10 assists in 37 second-tier appearances.

The 27-year-old also made a strong account of himself when the Saints beat Premier League sides Fulham and Arsenal during their impressive FA Cup run, which saw them reach the semi-finals, where they were beaten by Manchester City.

Southampton's self-inflicted failure to win promotion to the top flight last term has reduced their chances of retaining star players like Scienza.

The Brazilian previously played in the Bundesliga for Heidenheim, and may want to play at a higher level than the Championship once again.

Furthermore, the seven goals and 10 assists Scienza managed last season marked his career-best return, which could leave him feeling as though he is ready for a fresh challenge.

According to Brazilian outlet RTI Esporte, Scienza has a £25million release clause in his Southampton contract, decreasing the Saints' chances of retaining his services.

The presence of a release clause will encourage suitors to advance for the former Heidenheim man, especially after his current club failed to win promotion.

The Whites enjoyed a successful season last term, surviving in the Premier League and reaching the FA Cup semi-finals.

However, Leeds must now add further depth and quality to their squad as they look to make further progress in the top flight, hence their interest in Scienza and Charles.

Southampton's expulsion from the Championship play-offs last month was rightly one of the biggest footballing talking points at the end of the season.

However, while the 'Spygate' debacle got the nation's tongues wagging, it was also a difficult time for Saints supporters and gifted players like Scienza, who weren't allowed to play for a place in the Premier League through no fault of their own.

A major reason behind the 27-year-old's decision to swap Heidenheim for the Saints last summer was that the Hampshire outfit were battling for an immediate top-flight return.

Meanwhile, following Southampton's play-off expulsion, Scienza shared an emotional Instagram post, which included the paragraph: "We gave everything for this dream. Day after day, sacrifice after sacrifice, always believing we could bring this club back to where it belongs. For me, the dream of playing in the Premier League was something I fought for with everything I had. That’s why this pain cuts so deep."

The talented winger has made it no secret that he wants to play his football in the top flight, so the Saints may find it difficult to stave off interest in the former Bundesliga star from Leeds or similar suitors.
