The race for the European Golden Shoe is going down to the wire as the continent’s leading goalscorers battle for the crown.
Viktor Gyokeres is the current leader, with the Sporting CP striker having netted 39 league goals during his side’s Primeira Liga title triumph. His remarkable return means Gyokeres leads the way, despite Portugal’s inferior co-efficient.
Primeira Liga players earn 1.5 points per goal, in contrast to the 2 points earned per goal in the top-five European leagues. Gyokeres is bidding to become just the fourth player from outside of Europe’s top five leagues to win the European Golden Shoe since that rule change in 1997, after Nikos Machlas, Mario Jardel and Henrik Larsson.
However, Kylian Mbappe’s brilliant run of form has propelled the Real Madrid striker into the running. The French forward netted his 29th league goal of the season during Real Madrid’s 2-0 win at Sevilla on Sunday.
Mbappe still has one more game to get the single goal required to overtake Gyokeres, whose league season is over.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah also remains in the running. The Egyptian is one goal behind Mbappe, but has two games remaining. The Premier League champions travel to Brighton in the first of those fixtures this evening.
Last season’s winner, Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane, is fourth in the standings but cannot add to his haul this season. The Bundesliga campaign concluded at the weekend.
