West Brom have been hugely impressive under former player James Morrison, who many fans want to see land the job on a permanent basis.

West Brom extended their unbeaten run to nine games with a convincing 3-0 win over Watford at The Hawthorns on Tuesday night.

Albion had endured a torrid campaign, with the threat of relegation a real possibility after decisions to appoint Ryan Mason and particularly Eric Ramsay backfired.

With the prospect of dropping to the third tier, the Baggies turned to former player James Morrison to succeed Ramsay, and it has turned out to be an inspired call.

James Morrison has done a superb job at West Brom

Morrison hasn’t lost a game since his first one at Oxford, and the 17 points they have collected in the previous nine fixtures is the sort of form that would have you challenging for promotion.

Whilst a possible points deduction means West Brom can’t celebrate survival officially, they’re eight points clear of 22nd-placed Oxford with two games to go, so it’s highly likely they will be playing Championship football next season.

James Morrison discusses whether he wants the West Brom job permanently

Firstly, it should be said that Morrison hasn’t given much away with his interviews since he took the job, as he has been focused on getting results and keeping Albion in the league.

But, it was telling that he said after the Watford win that ‘given the chance’ he would try to take the club back to the Premier League, which he insists has to be the long-term aim.

Despite his lack of experience, Morrison appears to be enjoying life in the dugout, and even though he hasn’t explicitly said he wants to stay, you get the impression he would jump at the chance, so that shouldn’t be a problem for the Baggies.

Further talks are planned at the end of the season

Following on from that, Morrison stated a ‘conversation’ will take place at ‘the end of the season’, so it would suggest nothing is imminent.

That won’t come as a massive surprise, because, as outlined above, Albion still aren’t technically safe due to the possible points deduction, so they still have work to do.

This is a sensible move by all parties, as there’s no rush to get this over the line. Albion are a club close to Morrison’s heart, and he will be enjoying the way the team are playing, and the way the fans are fully behind what he is doing.

With games against Ipswich and Sheffield Wednesday to come, they will want to end the campaign on a high, and then they can finalise plans going into next season.

Of course, we can’t speak for every single West Brom fan, but it’s fair to say the vast majority are hoping and expecting Morrison to land the job permanently.

He already had credit in the bank from his playing days, and his emotional comments after the defeat to Oxford really hit home with many fans. Since then, the Baggies have kicked on, and it’s clear most of the players have improved under his guidance.

The supporters sung his name throughout the win over Watford, and, with Shilen Patel watching on, he will know that giving Morrison a long-term contract would go down very well.

It seems like a no-brainer for the West Brom hierarchy, and it would be no surprise if Morrison’s permanent appointment was announced shortly after the end of the season.
