Shelbourne FC is very pleased to announce the signing of Austrian defender Marco Untergrabner on a long-term deal subject to international clearance. Marco is a towering centre-back who also has experience in midfield. Standing at 6ft 4” (194cm) he has used his size to his advantage in both boxes, racking up 25 league goals over the past 3 seasons. Marco has tasted success across multiple divisions in Austrian football, most recently in the 2nd tier with Floridsdorfer AC where he made 27 appearances, scoring 3 goals.

Speaking with ShelsTV Marco said: “I am absolutely delighted to have signed for Shelbourne FC. Everyone at the club has made me feel very welcome from the moment that I arrived, and I immediately had a great feeling about the move from Graz to Dublin! I am really excited about starting this new chapter in my career at this club that has such a proud history. Shels have great ambition to match that history, and I am very happy to be a part of that now. I look forward to being able to help my team, to play at Tolka Park and to meet the fantastic Shelbourne supporters!

Shels Head Coach John Russell spoke about his new acquisition: “We are really happy to have brought Marco to the club. He’s a player we’ve been impressed with for a while now, and we believe that he has the qualities to make a big impact in the League of Ireland. Marco has an excellent physical profile; he is strong and athletic and dominant in the air. But he is also very comfortable in possession, and he has the ability to step into midfield and contribute when the game demands it.” Russell then talked about how best to integrate the Austrian into the first team setup. “It’s important that we manage his training load carefully over the first few weeks and to build up his fitness. Our priority is to get Marco fully up to speed and in the best possible condition to make a strong contribution during the run-in. We are looking forward to working with him, helping him to settle into the league and to settle into the club. I am sure that we will then see the qualities that Marco possesses at Shelbourne FC.”
