Win over Inter shows Serie A title is still Napoli’s to lose

Napoli issued a reminder of their title credentials as the defending Serie A champions, beating Inter 3-1 at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The home side had come into the game under a lot of pressure after the 6-2 thrashing they received midweek from PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League. But tonight Antonio Conte’s side were immensely professional, something associated from his teams, atleast domestically. Inter were perhaps the more attacking side but it was Napoli who had the substance in the end, with midfielders Kevin De Bruyne, Scott McTominay and Franck Zambo Anguissa all finding the back of the net. De Bruyne was only on the pitch for 37 minutes but that was enough for him to open the scoring from the spot. If he keeps fit, the Belgian is a difference maker of an arguably higher quality than anyone in the league. When De Bruyne went off, McTominay took over. The Scotsman provided a timely reminder of his goalscoring prowess, which took his team to the title last season. This season hasn’t started the way the last one ended but it is difficult to argue that he is the main man for them. Anguissa provided the steel to the style of the other two perfects and let his magic take over with a solo goal to finish the game off. Napoli take top spot again, after Milan slipped up earlier today, although Roma have the chance to potentially wrestle it back from them tomorrow. Even then, Napoli and Conte have put out a clear message once again – that they are the prime candidates to defend their title and it would take a lot more than a couple of bad results to change that.
