With Sosa, Vasco will hit foreign-player limit, who could lose their place | OneFootball

Vasco are close to announcing the signing of Sosa from Racing. His arrival would take the professional squad to nine foreign players, the maximum allowed to be named in Brasileiro matchday squads.

According to Globo.com, Pedro Emanuel could call up all overseas players at once, but any further foreign additions would force at least one omission from a matchday list.

Three are starters, with Sosa poised to become a fourth, namely Cuesta, Andrés Gómez and Spinelli. Nuno Moreira and Rojas have been important options and previous starters, but have lost ground in recent weeks.

Puma Rodríguez remains valuable, able to play both full-back roles and in attack, and he has started multiple times this season.

Others sit further back in the queue and could slip again, notably Saldivia and Marino Hinestroza. The Uruguayan centre-back and the Colombian forward joined at the start of the season and have not cemented places. Both have drawn enquiries this window, though the club have not moved them on.

Defence and the flanks are priorities this window. Saldivia rejected interest from Huracán in Argentina, and while Vasco would not oppose a deal, they prefer to sign a replacement first. Hinestroza is different, given the sizeable fee, and the club are reluctant to sell at any price or loan him before strengthening.

Talks are ongoing with River Plate for striker Facundo Colidio, who would take another foreign slot, and negotiations with Deossa for midfield continue after months. Other overseas attacking targets have been identified.

In 2024 the CBF raised the matchday foreigner cap, up from seven the previous year. Clubs may carry more foreigners overall, but only that number can be listed for each game.
