Wolfsburg enjoyed the majority of possession in the first-half, but Alexandra Popp and Lineth Beerensteyn only had half-chances. At the other end, 20-year-old attacker Mawa Sesay came very close to breaking the deadlock ten minutes before half-time.

The Dutch international Beerensteyn had the best chance of the visitors just before the half-time whistle, but Tove Enblom made an important block. For the first time this season, Wolfsburg Frauen’s game didn’t have a goal in the first 45 minutes.

Five minutes after the restart, Cora Zicai’s curler nearly found its way to the top corner. Shortly after, Wolfsburg took the lead through a moment of brilliance by Beerensteyn. The former Bayern Munich striker punished Sædís Rún Heiðarsdóttir after intercepting her misplaced back pass. Beerensteyn became the fifth Wolfsburg player to enter the top 100 top scorers in the Women's Champions League history with her 15th goal in the competition.

A couple of minutes later, it’s all square once again. Stina Johannes saved Eline Hegg’s header, but Sara Hørte converted the rebound from close range. Wolfsburg’s captain Janina Minge missed a big chance that could restore their lead when she headed wide from Popp’s pinpoint delivery.

Wolfsburg had another chance immediately when Arna Eiríksdóttir nearly scored an own-goal seconds after coming on the pitch as a substitute. Beerensteyn, who also scored in her first four Bundesliga appearances this season, had another great chance as the game entered the final ten minutes.

Wolfsburg looked like the side that would nick it in the closing stages, but they had to thank Johannes before the dramatic end to the game. The 25-year-old shot-stopper pulled the best save of the evening from Elise Thorsnes’ stunning effort from outside the box.

And, the visitors left it late to score from the final kick of the match. Vålerenga, who lost to Manchester United via a penalty-kick goal, got unlucky once again when Naina Inauen’s handball resulted in a harsh decision after a VAR check. Minge converted the chance from 12 yards to maintain Wolfsburg’s perfect start in the Champions League's new format.

Wolfsburg will face Leverkusen away from home before the international break. They will also be on the road on Champions League matchday three as they face Lyon, who won each of their first six games in all competitions. Ex-Wolfsburg winger Jule Brand scored her first goal for the French giants in their win tonight against SKN St. Pölten.
