Woltemade reflects on his World Cup penalty miss as he looks forward to Klopp era | OneFootball

Germany international Nick Woltemade opened up about several topics in a video conversation with Thomas Müller. The striker looked back at his miss in the penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay and shared his optimism for the new era in the interview sponsored by Google.

“Many players will be the same," said Woltemade as he expects similar selections by Jürgen Klopp. "If you look at the age of our players, it is still an exciting team. Now we get a new coach, let's see what will happen. It’s nice that we can go again in a few months.”

Germany will start life with Klopp in September with UEFA Nations League games. Woltemade also discussed his preferred position as he played in midfield under Eddie Howe last season.

"Preferably in a two-striker system or behind the striker. It's better for me to play with a lot of freedom and when I have someone around me." added Woltemade in his interview with the World Cup legend.

During Germany’s penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the Round of 32, Woltemade, Kai Havertz and Jonathan Tah failed to convert their attempts. The Newcastle United man looked back at the incident with regret.

"It didn't feel good. I asked myself where did I shot my last penalty-kicks and what the goalkeeper would expect. I thought I was the clever one when I went to the right.”

Germany will face neighbours Netherlands in Klopp’s debut on September 24th. Woltemade didn’t play any minutes in the group stage of the World Cup before entering the Paraguay game in the 88th minute.

"I'm still glad I took the penalty in hindsight. That goes with my way, my character, that I take the ball, although the tournament hasn't gone quite optimally for me by then." concluded the 24-year-old.

After earlier reports of a loan move, The Athletic ruled out rumors as the former Stuttgart striker is set to stay at Newcastle United.
